Diabetes and the eyes
For many years diabetes has been the leading cause of blindness. Diabetes eye damage must be picked up early for it to be successfully stopped or treated. If damage is picked up late there is often not much that can be done to save your sight.
The two main parts of your eyes that diabetes can affect are called the 'lens' and the 'retina'.
How do I delay or prevent eye damage?
- Maintain healthy blood glucose levels
- Maintain a healthy blood pressure
- Quit smoking
- Maintain healthy blood cholesterol
What changes of vision for visiting the doctor?
- Shadow or black spots over your vision
- Blurred vision
- Trouble in reading
- Pain in one or both the eyes
- A feeling of pressure in your eyes
- Your side vision becomes less clear
Its very important that you have a full diabetes eye check when you first know that you have diabetes. From that time on you should have regular eye check's.
